THOMPSON & BOWIE, LLP handles a diverse range of cases within the general area defined as “civil litigation,” including virtually all types of insurance defense issues and coverage analysis. We are primarily an insurance defense litigation firm, though we have expertise in many other areas. Our attorneys encounter and resolve disputes involving personal injury, property damage, subrogation, and commercial and economic losses on a daily basis. We have expertise ranging from common automobile and premises liability claims to more specialized areas, such as, construction, bond claims, professional liability, municipal liability, workers’ compensation, and civil rights claims.
Our firm has always been involved in the defense of product liability claims. We have represented manufacturers, foreign and domestic, on claims involving products ranging from electric knives to helicopters. Our clients include major truck, tractor, automobile, pharmaceutical, airplane, helicopter and aviation product manufacturers, building material distributors, and makers of a wide range of industrial and consumer products.
Thompson & Bowie, LLP also brings specialized experience to the field of transportation litigation. Many of these cases relate to catastrophic motor vehicle accidents in which we represent trucking manufacturers, as well as motor carriers and their employees.
The expertise of our firm is clearly demonstrated by our frequent involvement in cases which have helped shape the law in Maine. Over the past 30 years, we have established a stricter burden of proof for punitive damages in Tuttle v. Raymond , convinced the Maine Law Court to uphold the legislative limits on damages under Maine’s liquor liability law in Peters v. Powell , the only instance to date in which the Law Court has upheld a cap on damages, and in Bangor Water District v. Malcolm Pirnie , we persuaded the Law Court to reject a serious challenge to the statue of limitations as it applies to design professionals.
